Te Papa wins top Computerworld excellence awards - 16 April 1999

Te Papa won the two top awards in the Computerworld Excellence Awards ceremony in Auckland last night.

Te Papa won the Most Successful Project Implementation Award and the supreme award of Overall Excellence in the Use of Information Technology.

The awards recognised both the contribution that Te Papa's information technology has made to the overall visitor experience and the professional implementation of Te Papa's many technology-related projects.

These include everything from the Build a Bird educational interactive in Mountains to Sea, to the computer interactives in Passports, which simulate sailing ship voyages, to the virtual reality and ride simulation technology in Time Warp and to the object theatre Papatūānuku in the Awesome Forces exhibition.

'It is extremely exciting for Te Papa to win these prestigious awards and I must acknowledge the wonderful partnership we have with our sponsor Compaq whose support and expertise contributed to Te Papa winning these awards,' Te Papa's Chief Executive Dame Cheryll Sotheran said today.

Other entrants included Saturn Communications, New Zealand Health Information Services, and South Auckland Health.

This is not the first time Te Papa's innovative use of leading edge technology has been acknowledged. Last year Te Papa won the Gold Medal in the prestigious International Multimedia Awards in New York for its interactive computer database Te Papa Onscreen.

Since opening just over a year ago, Te Papa has attracted over 2.35 million visitors.

Te Papa's regular random exit surveys reveal that 97 per cent of visitors will recommend Te Papa to friends and family and 76 per cent will visit again within 12 months. Some 37 per cent of visitors are already on repeat visits.
