What repatriation research is Te Papa doing at the moment

The Repatriation Team at Te Papa is undertaking a number of research projects at the moment.  These areas of study include:

  • Historical research from records within New Zealand (for example information held at Archives New Zealand, catalogue books and records from the Colonial Museum)
  • Research based on accession information received from overseas institutions who have repatriated Toi moko back to Te Papa
  • Study of shipping information and records
  • Research into the history, techniques, and styles of moko (facial tattooing)
Research into prominent collectors of Toi moko – particularly Major-General Robley, William Oldman, and Kenneth Athol Webster.
