The Repatriation Team at Te Papa is undertaking a number of research projects at the moment. These areas of study include:
Historical research from records within New Zealand (for example information held at Archives New Zealand, catalogue books and records from the Colonial Museum)
Research based on accession information received from overseas institutions who have repatriated Toi moko back to Te Papa
Study of shipping information and records
Research into the history, techniques, and styles of moko (facial tattooing)
Research into prominent collectors of Toi moko – particularly Major-General Robley, William Oldman, and Kenneth Athol Webster.
