Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rito in Otaki presented this piece as a koha (gift) to Te Papa’s education team in Otaki, in 2004. The children from the kura have woven stars out of harakeke (flax) then hung these from the kōrari (seed stalk of the flax). The seven stars represent the stars that can be seen in the Matariki constellation. These are Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupuanuku, Tupuarangi, and Ururangi. The seventh star is called Matariki.
