Pōwhiri Experience

Learn about how a pōwhiri happens and why it is unique to Aotearoa.

Come onto Te Papa’s marae to experience a pōwhiri (welcoming ceremony) and gain an understanding of when, where, and how pōwhiri can be applied.

Students will explore the meaning of pōwhiri by experiencing the nine major steps on Te Papa’s wharenui, Te Hono ki Hawaiki and/or Te Hau ki Turanga. Taonga (treasures) on display in the museum further illuminate the origins of the pōwhiri process.
