Hot Spots tour

From December this year to April 2010 Te Papa is to host the exhibition A Day in Pompeii comprising 250 artefacts loaned by the Italian authorities. The exhibits include household items, tools, pottery, jewellery, furniture and frescoes and, poignantly, modern casts of some the victims of the eruption found during excavation.

Tour details

In preparation for the exhibition your Committee has been developing a special tour for Friends to see and learn about volcanic processes and the impact on people of eruptions in New Zealand's modern history. The tour will take place from Friday 20 to Monday 23 November beginning with a special introduction to Maori legend and inner at Tumunui near Rotorua . It will include travel to and landing on White Island, with guides, to see the remnants of the sulphur mining operation destroyed in the 1912 lahar, an overnight stay at Whakatane with dinner at a first class seafood restaurant and return to Rotorua with a guided visit to the Buried Village engulfed in the 1886 Tarawera eruption. There will be an opportunity to visit the Rotorua Art Gallery and Museum in the beautifully restored Tudor style building in the Gardens.

Airline schedules to Rotorua, and the need to plan for an alternative day for the weather-dependent landing on White Island, require a three night visit (Fri-Sat-Sun) which would give participants the chance on Monday to add on their own extra activities, such as a visit to the Agrodome or the Redwood forest, if desired.

Estimated costs

The estimated cost per person on a twin share basis covering two dinners, bus/boat travel, admission and landing charges and 3 nights' accommodation will be around $780. There would be a single supplement. Participants would be responsible for organising their own travel to arrive in Rotorua by 5 o'clock Friday 20 November and for their homeward travel on Monday 23 November.
