The four Lawan - Sikh wedding hymns
The first hymn is about the couple’s anticipation of their
love, which
will come once they are joined. They must respect each other’s family,
and
have patience with each other’s thoughts and feelings.
The second hymn celebrates the development of the couple’s relationship
into love, which will outlast youth and beauty. Troubles and illnesses are
to
be viewed as opportunities for service and sacrifice.
The third hymn is about how the couple will develop a mature relationship
so that they remain sedate and calm. They will detach themselves from all
pride
and vain desires, and become devoted to God.
The fourth hymn celebrates the complete union of bride and groom, who become
‘one spirit in two bodies’.
