FEAR NO ART Art in the Service of Community

In 2012, the extraordinary Umberto Crenca – co-founder and Artistic Director of visionary arts organisation AS220 in Providence, USA – toured New Zealand and shared the story of AS220’s role in building community.  Now, fresh from a month-long residency at AS220, Puke Ariki’s Manager of Programmes & Experiences Ruth Harvey shares her insider’s view of the organisation’s vibrant, experimental and entrepreneurial culture.  Ruth’s presentation will reflect on some of AS220’s key philosophies: quality by providing opportunity; providing multiple points of entry; living the mission; and addressing areas of need.  Taking Bert’s mantra of “fear no art” as a starting point, Ruth considers how fostering creativity and providing space can transform our communities.

Who will I meet?

Ruth Harvey is Manager Programmes & Experiences at Puke Ariki in New Plymouth.  She has significant arts experience within New Zealand and Australia.  She has a Master of Arts in Art History and Theory from the University of Otago (2005) and in 2010 she was the youngest ever recipient of a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship, researching effective ways to engage youth and young adults in cultural institutions.
