Call for museum and gallery applications
We're looking for some great projects from museums and galleries for the 2011/12 Museum Graduate Internship Programme (MGIP).
MGIP is a National Services Te Paerangi initiative that enables a recent museum studies graduate to work on a project at a museum or gallery, guided by a professional mentor from the museum or gallery. Suggested internship projects might be: documentation of a particular collection or the planning of a forthcoming exhibition. This year two internships are available.
Aim of the Museum Graduate Internship Programme
MGIP is a national project which has been created to:
- provide small to medium sized museums and galleries with trained personnel (the interns) who will bring in new knowledge and complete a specified short-term project at the museum or gallery; and
- provide museum studies graduates with the opportunity to take up practical projects in a museum or gallery for three months.
During the internship the intern is guided by a mentor, who is a museum professional either based on site, or at a larger museum nearby.
Museum/gallery criteria
For an organisation to be eligible to apply for an MGIP intern, it must meet these four criteria:
- A project exists that is suitable for a recent museum studies graduate to complete, which will take 2–3 months from start to finish.
- A suitably skilled senior staff member is available every day for the duration of the project to be the on-site mentor.
- Able to assist the intern with low cost or free accommodation and travel expenses.
- The museum or gallery has limited resources (financial and staffing) and could not hire staff for the project.
If your museum or gallery meets the criteria above, you qualify to apply for an intern through the contestable process. Preference will be given to museums that didn’t have an intern in 2009/10.

2009/10 Museum Graduate Internships
The museum graduate intern placements for 2009/2010 continued the success of previous years. Three placements around the country had great outcomes for the graduates and the institutions that they have worked with.
Julia Waite, a graduate from Victoria University Heritage and Museum Studies, worked with the Ashburton Museum team where she engaged predominantly with the furniture collection. A highlight of her internship was the exhibition she curated from the museum's pictorial collection at the Ashburton Art Gallery.
Mark Holland, graduate of Massey University Museum Studies, is busy at the National Army Museum, and Ruth Vaega, also a graduate of Massey University Museum Studies, completed her internship at the South Canterbury Museum.
