I live near Nelson in Ruby Bay, one of the small settlements in the Tasman District. Much of my time is spent visiting the great people who keep our country in touch with its history, its culture and its identity. For me this is a pleasure and a privilege. I have always been a keen art gallery and museum visitor and since working in the sector have enjoyed immensely meeting the people who make it all happen.
My previous museum roles have been in Nelson, most recently as The Nelson Provincial Museum’s Manager of Collection Services. This was a busy and challenging job, including management of the large and varied collection, collection and technical staff and recently exhibition development and delivery, based at the museum’s Research Facility in Isel Park, Stoke.
In 2005 I was privileged to be part of a small, dedicated team responsible for the management, development and delivery of the new Nelson Provincial Museum exhibition centre in the heart of Nelson City. Currently the team has been beginning the task of digitising the photographic collection of over 1.2 million images dating from the 1860’s and installing a new database and browser to provide on-line delivery.
Previously I worked for Nelson’s Suter Art Gallery as collection curator and during this period completed my Masters Degree in Museum Studies and curated a number of art and object based exhibitions at The Suter Art Gallery and museum including the centennial year Suter’s Legacy and the Sarah Greenwood exhibition. My experience is now broadly based from hands-on in collections and exhibitions through to management.
Having worked with diverse groups of people, mainly in regional institutions, I have developed a strong awareness of the importance of ongoing training, communication and collaboration in all areas of museum work and across the sector. I am very aware of the support required in the sector and the unique challenges faced by cultural organisations in New Zealand.
I am married with a partner who works in the arts and we have two grown up sons.
