Introducing Gavin Reedy

Gavin Reedy, Iwi Development Officer

Ko Hikurangi te maunga.
Ko Waiapu te awa.
Ko Ngāti Porou te iwi.
Ko Gavin Reedy tōku ingoa.

I am forty-something years old. I attended Pencarrow School, Wainui-o-mata Intermediate, and Wainui-o-mata College. My mum and dad are still living in our whānau house in Wainui-o-mata, which we moved into around 1958. I left Wellington in 1979 for a holiday to the Halcombe area with my wife, Denise, and have only just returned to take up this position with Te Papa.

I worked for many years as a labourer and still work in the shearing sheds in the weekend with my wife’s family, who are Ngāti Pikiahu–Waewae from the Rangitikei–Manawatu border. My wife’s whānau marae there is Poupatate, named after the kingitanga movement. We have four children.

I was taught carving by rangatira Te Whetu Marama o te Ata Kereama (Kelly). I stayed with him for six years, carving four whare in that time. As well as learning carving, I learnt that art is what you make of it – don’t be afraid to give it a go!

This experience led me to Palmerston North College of Education and Massey, where I received my Dip Tch B Ed. I have taught at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, doing stints at Hato Paora, Turakina, Palmerston North Girls' High School, Universal College of Learning, and Massey University.

My last position was at the Palmerston North campus of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. I am excited to be back in my home city and love the vibrancy that is Wellington.

No reira e hoa mā, ka nui taku mihi ki a koutou katoa i tēnei wā.
