Bird Banding

For more than sixty years, people have been banding birds in New Zealand. Information recovered from these birds helps with the conservation of native species, the management of game birds, and the control of pests.

On these pages, you’ll find out about what to do if you find a banded bird. You’ll also find about New Zealand’s banding scheme and how it contributes to the international effort to monitor the movements of birds.

If you are sending in the metal band with the report:

  • Please make sure that the letters and numbers on the band are written on the recovery report. Metal bands are often lost or removed in the post.
  • Flatten the metal band with pliers and tape it to the recovery report.
  • Note the band number on a piece of paper and retain it until you receive notification of receipt from the New Zealand Banding Scheme.
