Art and visual culture
The development of the National Collection began in 1905 under the guidance of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Artworks purchased between 1905 and 1936 formed the basis of the collection and included early New Zealand and international works with an emphasis on Britain.
From 2001– 2010, the Sculpture Terrace on Level 6 has provided a unique outdoor site for exhibitions at Te Papa.
A number of Te Papa's art works, objects and Taonga are available in the Google Art project, in high resolution, alongside iconic works from other major institutions around the world.
