What is an RSS feed
“Podcasting” is a hybrid of the terms “broadcasting” and “iPod.” It is a relatively new method for distributing audio, video, and other media files over the Internet. A true podcast is distinct from other types of online media delivery because of its subscription model. Operating much like a magazine subscription, podcast delivery is through a subscription “feed.” Subscribers receive regular updates on the media files available for download from the Web pages they select.
If you have iTunes installed: Open iTunes, choose "Subscribe to Podcast" from the "Advanced" menu, and copy and paste the podcast feed URL into the "Subscribe to Podcast" window.

Podcast users subscribe to feeds using aggregators (also commonly known as news readers, feed readers, or feed aggregators), programs that periodically check for and download new content automatically.
The first thing you need is podcast subscription software, also known as an aggregator. Aggregators are programs that scan and gather podcasts feeds, pages of code that are used to share images, audio (podcasts), and other media files. There are many free aggregators from which to choose. Two options that work for Mac and PC users are:

At this point, you will be able to listen to podcast audio from your computer. If you want to make your podcasts portable, you will need to transfer them from your computer to a portable digital music player.

No. Neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can store and play podcasts.
If you don’t have a digital audio player, you may download and listen to a podcast from any computer that has audio software. To download a podcast to your computer, right-click the MP3 or M4a icon and select “Save target as…” from the pull-down menu. Mac users: Press the “Control” key, click on the link, and select “Download linked file.”
iPod users: Open iTunes, then go to “File > Add to Library…” When the dialogue box appears, browse your system for the downloaded file. When you find it, click “Choose” to pull it into your iTunes library. The podcast should be available on your player the next time you sync your iPod with iTunes.
Really Simple Syndication. This is really a text file that lists the file name of the podcast. when a user 'subscribes' to the podcast by adding the address into their podcast software (e.g iTunes, iPodder, Juice etc..) the software will periodically/automatically revisit the website which has the podcasts listed.
