Discovery Centres' Community Displays

Opotiki ArtHouse Murals on display in Te Huka ā TaiFor three months, Te Papa's Discovery Centres will be proud host for several magnificent murals produced by the children of Opotiki district in the eastern Bay of Plenty. The murals were part of the Youth Art in Public Places (YAPP) programme. The project was organised by Opotiki Children’s Art House  and involving over 200 young people aged between twelve and seventeen. The genesis of the idea came from the New Zealand Police's Bluelight committee, as part of an initiative to instil a sense of civic and personal pride in young people. This inspirational idea turned into reality has enhanced Opotiki's town centre with the addition of several stylish, gorgeous and thoughtful murals with unashamedly positive themes. They've even become a tourist attraction!

Many community groups, schools and individuals also supported the youth to create these murals which are a celebration of their hard work, commitment and wonderful creativity. The murals will be on display in all four Discovery Centres until the end of the year.
