Building upon the success of Te Papa’s 2008 touring retrospective exhibition Rita Angus: Life & Vision and Jill Trevelyan’s prize-winning biography, Rita Angus: An artist’s life, Te Papa is very pleased to offer Rita Angus: Selected Works to regional galleries.
The exhibition features 40 works by Rita Angus covering the span of her career, from 1929 to 1969. It includes paintings, watercolours and drawings, unfinished studies, and seldom seen items. The exhibition has been selected from Te Papa’s collection, and fromworks cared for by the Museum on behalf of the Rita Angus Estate.
Drawing on similar themes and storylines to Rita Angus: Life & Vision, the exhibition includes portraits and self-portraits, works that show her abiding interest in nature, and her late depictions of Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. It features several key works from Rita Angus: Life & Vision. These include Self-portrait (1929), Fay and Jane Birkinshaw (1938), Lawrence Baigent (1938–39/43), Self portrait (nude, seated) (1944), Central Otago (1953–56/69), and Flight (1968–69).
Like Rita Angus: Life & Vision, the exhibition is divided into three broad segments. The first includes Angus’s striking self-portraits, portraits of close friends, and intimate images of the artist that document troubled periods in her life.
The second segment documents Angus’s interest in nature and landscape. Central Otago will again be a focus here, along with images of Mangonui, Waikanae, and Kaikoura. As in Rita Angus: Life & Vision, flower studies and experimental abstracts will be a source of considerable visitor interest.
The third segment includes the late Self-portrait (1966) – an image of the artist as warrior-priestess – images of her home in Thorndon, her travels through Hawke’s Bay, and finally, her powerful response to the destruction of the Bolton St cemetery.
