The Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 are among the most significant events in New Zealand’s history. Te Papa is collecting objects and filming stories around the earthquakes – particularly focusing on public support, such as fundraising and spirit-raising initiatives. We also wish to explore creative and entrepreneurial responses.
From precious jewellery to tea-towels, objects and their makers tell a multitude of stories from those at the epicentre to the rest of New Zealand.
History Curators Claire Regnault and Stephanie Gibson showcase some of the highlights from this project and discuss some of the challenges.
