Conservators Melanie Carlisle and Katherine Campbell discuss the conservation of Te Papa’s recent acquisition Poedua (Poetua), daughter of Oreo, chief of Ulaietea, one of the Society Isles.
Poedua was painted by John Webber in 1785 and acquired by Te Papa in 2010. In early 2011, after being on display for several months, it was brought to the paintings conservation lab to undergo technical examination and treatment.
While Poedua was structurally in very good condition for its age, the painting carried a discoloured varnish layer and heavy soiling, obscuring the colours and tones of the artist’s intention.
