Volcanoes are responsible for lots of moving and shaking around the world. New Zealand has several active volcanoes smouldering away right now. Tongariro National Park is home to Ruapehu, one of our most active volcanoes. It last erupted, in spectacular fashion, in 1996.

The iwi (tribe) Ngāti Tūwharetoa tell a story known as The Battle of the Mountains – the fight between Tongariro and the other powerful mountains of the central
North Island. The dispute was over Pīhanga, the beautiful maiden mountain. Who do you think won Pīhanga’s heart? Find out here
