Researcher Elizabeth Kay tells the story of the discovery and restoration of a forgotten masterpiece on display in Angels & Aristocrats.
Dead Christ Supported by Two Angels was painted by an unknown artist in Italy in the 16th century. It entered the collection of a 19th-century Scottish wine merchant, hung for a time in Government House in Wellington, went back to Britain to Windsor Castle, was gifted to Wellington Cathedral, and ended up forgotten and neglected.
In this talk, Elizabeth traces the history of the painting and shares the clues that eventually led to its restoration and public display in Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
