Kahu Ora Whānau Day

Discovery Centres throughout Te Papa

Bring the family to Te Papa for a day of Kahu Ora-themed creativity and discovery. Make your own kākahu (cloak), talk to a curator, enjoy free story-telling sessions at StoryPlace – and more!

The day concludes with a whakaaturanga kākahu (parade) at The Marae, Level 4.

StoryPlace, Level 2

Discover the world of manu (birds) in a special day of free story-telling sessions for pre-schoolers. And help to create a StoryPlace kahu huruhuru (feather cloak). Sessions last 45 minutes. 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 2.45pm

Te Huka ā Tai, Level 4

Curator Awhina Tamarapa talks about Kahu Ora and introduces some taonga (treasures) from Te Papa’s collection. 10.30am–11.30am

PlaNet Pasifika, Level 4

Weave your way through the Pacific! Watch a fashion performance by ‘Le Moana’, learn about some woven Pasifika collection items with Te Papa’s Grace Hutton, and weave a colourful Samoan dress. 1pm–2pm

NatureSpace, Level 2

See harakeke (New Zealand flax) in Te Papa's garden, then learn how to harvest it and produce muka (flax fibre). Meet at NatureSpace. 1.45pm–2.15pm

Create fantastic kākahu (cloaks) and wearable art from recycled materials and turn junk into funk! 2pm–3.30pm 

Inspiration Station, Level 4

Adorn yourself in Kahu Ora­-inspired dress-ups and get a free Flash New You printout. 10am–4pm

The Marae, Level 4

Come and show off the creations you’ve made during the day, or join the audience for our Kahu Ora whakaaturanga kākahu (parade). 3.30pm–4pm
