Art commentators and collectors Jim Barr and Mary Barr draw on two decades of personal recollections in this insider’s view of artist Michael Parekowhai.

Jim Barr and Mary Barr have known Michael since his last year at art school in 1990. They were also early collectors of his work, including the installation The indefinite article, now in the Auckland Art Gallery’s collection.

They were constant visitors to Michael’s studio throughout the process of creating his work for the Venice Biennale 2011. The installation included the carved piano named He kōrero pūrākau mo te awanui o te motu: story of a New Zealand river, now in Te Papa’s collection.

Their discussion of Michael and his work includes photographs and videos.
