Award-winning producer and composer David Long and The Phoenix Foundation’s Samuel Flynn Scott present an insiders’ guide to writing songs and composing for film.
David Long
David Long produces, composes, and performs music. He was a founding member of the seminal New Zealand band, The Mutton Birds. Long has produced albums for artists including Dave Dobbyn, Barry Saunders, Lucid 3, and Leila Adu. He won Producer of the Year at the 2002 New Zealand Music Awards for his work on Fur Patrol’s album Pet.
Long also composes music for film and television. He has worked on all of Peter Jackson’s films of the last decade, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong, and The Lovely Bones. His original scores for the television series Insiders Guide to Happiness (2005) and Insiders Guide to Love (2006) were recognised at the Air New Zealand Film and Television Awards two years running.

Samuel Flynn Scott
Samuel Flynn Scott is a songwriter, guitarist, producer, and film composer. He has made four albums and toured the world with The Phoenix Foundation, whose last album, Buffalo, was met with wide acclaim. Scott has also contributed original score to several feature films (Boy, Eagle vs Shark, Separation City), released several solo albums, produced an album for Eva Prowes, and generally made a ridiculous amount of music.
