Te Papa offers you the opportunity to play Michael Parekowhai’s beautifully carved grand piano, He kōrero pūrākau mo te awanui o te motu: story of a New Zealand river.

In 2012, when Te Papa first showed He kōrero, everyone from kids to concert pianists came along to play the work. With pieces ranging from Chopsticks to Chopin concertos, they transformed the gallery with music.

Please note that the piano can only be played on Saturday afternoons on the dates advertised. At all other times, feel free to look – but please don’t touch.

On Fridays and Saturdays from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, you can hear the piano being played by Venice Biennale pianists Catherine McKay (until end June) and Ariana Odermatt (July through September).

Book a time to play the piano – bookings are essential
