Rangatahi Occupy! Will see Te Papa occupied by Rangatahi and acitivities focused at young people. Rangatahi Occupy! will host inspiring young Maori leaders, workshops and performances.


Occupy this space!

21-22 June 2014.

10am-11am. Te Marae. Level 4.

Come and listen to young Maori leaders  and of the spaces they occupy, and how they occupy thos spaces.

Saturday's speakers: Dr Ocean Mercier, Te Rawhitiroa Bosch and Julia Amua Whaipooti.

Sunday's speakers: Kiritapu Allen, Puawai Cairns and Horiana Irwin.

Occupied! workshops and discussions.

Workshops and forums to rally rangatahi to be proactive citizens. Covering discussions on gender roles, creative expression and documentation through photography. Facilitated by rangatahi for rangatahi.

Saturday's workshops:

11.30am: Te mana o te wahine me te tane. Identity and gender roles.

Signs of a Nation. Level 4.

12.30pm: Slam Poetry workshop.

Occupy the stage!

Rangatahi Occupy will end each day with performancers of music, dance and slam poetry. Wellington Foyer will be the stage for waiata on Saturday with Ladyfruit and Takapuwahia Pa locals Jahnetix. Sunday will host Soul Clap a B-Boy B-Girl Battle.

Saturday's programme:

2.30pm: Ladyfruit.

3pm: Jahnetix.

12pm: Soul Clap B Boy B Girl Battle.

2.30pm: Slam Poetry with Te Kahu Rolleston.


Jahnetix are a band made up of two sets of brothers and family who hail from Takapuwhahia Pā, Porirua.

Soul Clap

Soul Clap is the first-ever Matariki breakdance battle. It’s presented by Te Papa and the Wellington chapter of international hip hop organisation The Universal Zulu Nation. The host is Juse 1, with prize money up for grabs for first- and second-place getters.
