2010 is the 30th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube. With over 350 million sold since 1980, this is the biggest-selling toy of all time. It’s enjoying a surge of new interest, riding a wave of 80s retro-cool revival. The traditional 3x3 cube has 43 quintillion possible configurations but only one solution.
Earlier this year, Feliks Zemdegs, a Melbourne 14-year-old, beat the world’s fastest 3x3 cubers. His best average solve-time was 9.21 seconds across 5 trials. Australia’s young world champion and record holder will be at the New Zealand champs at Te Papa. Watch him try to smash more records!
Feliks craves the holy grail of cubing – the world record for a single 3x3 speed-solve. That’s currently 7.08 seconds.
In addition to the regular 3x3, 4x4, and 5x5 speed-solve events, there’ll be a one-handed solve, and even a blindfolded solve, which relies on astounding memory skills.
