Conversations with three leading New Zealand fashion designers
at Te Papa.
A unique series of conversations inspired by Te Papa Press’s celebrated new publication New Zealand Fashion Design. Author Angela Lassig will talk with three of New Zealand’s leading contemporary fashion designers about their professional and personal evolution; what inspires their designs; their methods of working; and their career highlights. Each of the conversations will be illustrated with images from the designers’ personal archives, and will include exclusive runway footage.
Angela Lassig was Senior Curator, History, at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, where she specialised in fashion and textiles.
Murray Crane
‘I’ve had contact with kids I was at high school with in the last few years and they all said they remembered me being photographed for my fifth-form school photo wearing a suit. It was the same with my first job. I was always in a suit, albeit reworked and remodelled.’
A former menswear designer for Karen Walker and Zambesi, Auckland-based menswear designer Murray Crane is rarely seen in public wearing anything other than a suit. It’s with this most traditional of menswear that he’s made his name amongst sartorially switched-on New Zealand males. The fine tailoring that has become a hallmark of his Crane Brothers label is also an important element of his street wear label, Little Brother. The label was founded in 1999 and, since last April, has been sold exclusively by Barkers. Little Brother showed at New Zealand Fashion Week in 2005 and 2006 to critical acclaim.
