Celebrate Thailand’s enchanting Loy Krathong festival with music and dance performances from New Zealand’s Thai community.

Of all the annual festivals in Thailand, none is more essentially Thai than Loy Krathong. On the night of the full moon of the 12th lunar month, people throughout Thailand gather by waterways to pay homage to Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water.

In Thai, loy means ‘to float’ and a krathong is a small lotus-shaped boat made out of banana leaves. The focus of the festival is the launch of krathong bearing offerings of flowers, incense, a candle, and a coin for Mae Khongkha.
