Come along to this illustrated presentation by Angela Lassig, Curator History, about Mollie Rodie's beautifully rendered and gorgeously coloured costume designs for the Pageant of Empire (1939) and the Victory Queen Carnival (1941). The presentation will include photos of the events and background information.
The Mollie Rodie Mackenzie gift
In 2008 Te Papa received an extraordinary collection of costume sketches and related material, generously donated by Mollie Rodie Mackenzie, a noted fashion journalist for more than 40 years. Te Papa's material relates to Mackenzie's early career in Wellington in the late 1930s and early 1940s, when she was an in-demand costume designer of considerable skill.
Information about the events
The sketches held by Te Papa relate to two major theatrical events held in Wellington at the beginning of World War II: the Pageant of Empire, staged at the Centennial Exhibition in 1939; and the Victory Queen Carnival of 1941, for which Rodie designed garments for the participating queens, their retinues and participants in the spectacular Coronation Ceremony.
