A combination of fashion, architecture, and performance, The Monstrous Red Dress fuses imagination and the world of the everyday. Witness the spectacle of this dress – a vivid response to Wellington’s black-uniformed workers.

Designer and artist Lauren Skogstad studies Spatial Design at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University, Wellington. Her practice uses the urban environment as a site for the performance of embodied explorations. The monumental presence of the female figure in The Monstrous Red Dress asks viewers to re-examine the way people inhabit the city. 

Follow the Red Dress through Te Papa Tongarewa to Puwhara, then watch the performance from outside on the waterfront.

The Xinjiang (Uygur) Dance Troupe brings together a group of world-class performers for an amazing show. The troupe has visited France, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, Russia, and New Zealand.

It has been 50 years since the Troupe’s last visit to Wellington – don’t miss it!

The concert programme incorporates singing, solo and group dances, a fashion show, and Chinese folk music performances.

The dances show Chinese national characteristics and the influence of modern times.

Explore Te Papa through touch, sound, and detailed descriptions in a sensory tour of the Museum.

10.30am–12 noon & 3pm–4.30pm: 90-minute tour
Designed especially for people with visual and mobility impairments, this 90-minute tour is sure to educate and enthral. Meet at the Information Desk on Level 2 five minutes before tour commences.

12 noon–12.10pm: Talk by Jan Hinde
Jan Hinde, Executive Director of Arts Access Aotearoa, will talk about accessible organisations and provide examples of arts organisations in New Zealand leading the way in providing access to the arts for everyone.

12.10pm–1pm: Love Lifted Me
Watch and sing along to Love Lifted Me, a musical about overcoming fears and extending boundaries. This is a one-off show by performers from Ace House.

1pm–1:10pm: The Learning Connexion                                     Jaqueline Benndorf and Ann Eves from The Learning Connexion (TLC) will talk about their work and the unique access that TLC offers to deaf and hearing impaired students. This presentation will be translated into New Zealand Sign Language.

1:10pm–2:10pm: Art activities
Join in art activities run by tutors from Vincents Art Workshop. Watch a DVD about the work Vincents does to help people with disabilities integrate into the community, and visit the information table to view examples of art works made by people participating in Vincents art programmes. http://www.vincents.co.nz/about.html

2:10-2:20pm: Wendi Wicks and Robyn Hunt                              Disabled people experience high levels of abuse and violence, which is often unacknowledged. The Disability Clothesline project breaks the silence about this violence and abuse, and enables victims to give creative expression to their experiences when they use tee shirts as their canvases. The wonderful Apifo'ou College Brass Band is touring to raise funds to help renovate and rebuild the College’s school buildings in Tonga. They present a festive programme to get you into the Christmas spirit.

The buildings are all in poor condition, but because of the economic crisis there is no money for maintenance work. Any funds the band earns will help the future generation of Tonga.
