The scenes you see in this clip show what Pompeii was like at 5pm, when chunks of large pumice from the ash cloud plummet into the buildings. See the semi-buried streets and roads, and watch as the roofs of Pompeii’s buildings begin to collapse under the weight of the accumulated rock and ash. The dense ash cloud has obliterated the sun. Darkness is broken only by flashes of lightning, which adds to the terror of the fleeing inhabitants.
