Photograph, 1895 “Contours Of Naples - Crater of Vesuvius before the eruption of 5 July 1895” (Contorni Di Napoli – Cratere del Vesuvio avanti l’eruzione del 5 Luglio 1895)

Photograph from the album Italy and Asia 1850 – 1900.

For 200 years from the mid-17th century, the Grand Tour of Europe was a fashionable rite-of-passage among the British nobility. In company with a tutor, the young (male) aristocrat would travel for months, or even years, to places associated with classic antiquity and the Renaissance.

The album Italy and Asia 1850–1900 depicts scenes of Rome, Naples, Capri, Pisa and Pompeii, all popular destinations on the Grand Tour.

The photographs are albumen based prints, made from glass slides of the same size. They were probably taken by Giacomo Brogi (1822-1881), an Italian photographer. His son, Carlo Brogi (1850-1925) took over his father's business, trading under the name "Edizioni Brogi Firenze".
