Middle East
Egypt 1954, Brake, Brian (1927–1988), Egypt. Gift of Mr Raymond Wai-Man Lau, 2001. Te Papa
As well as Europe, Brake also worked in the Middle East early in his career.
In 1956, Brake and his partner, writer Nigel Cameron, embarked on a world trip with the idea of collaborating on magazine articles. The Middle East was their first stop on their way to Asia.
Cameron later wrote a book about the trip called To the East a Phoenix, while Brake’s photographs appeared in a National Geographic article on Aden, and an Illustrated magazine story on the medical treatment of a girl who fell down a well. He returned to the region on later assignments.
