Autobiography, Greek pottery tradition, Willie Nelson, erotica, and well-known American brands come together in this large vase by ceramic artist Paul Maseyk.
It is one of several monumental pieces Maseyk made during an artist's residency at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Montana, USA. Influenced by the ancient Greek tradition of highly adorned vessels, Maseyk has decorated the vase with fine line drawings that combine his experiences in Montana with famous American images.
Maseyk continues to make domestic pottery alongside provocative, large-scale pieces. Te Papa’s acquisition recognises an emerging artist whose work is attracting increasing international acclaim.
