Bill Culbert transforms ordinary objects into thought-provoking artworks. He encourages the viewer to appreciate the poetry and beauty of everyday items, like these plastic bottles. Handy Andy is a popular New Zealand brand of household cleaner.
Writers have commented that for Culbert, light is both a subject – the illumination of everyday objects – and a material – in this case, a fluorescent light tube.
Culbert is New Zealand’s representative at the 2013 Venice Biennale, a major international exhibition of contemporary art. Te Papa holds a number of his works, including collaborative projects with artist Ralph Hotere. One of these, VOID, is located at the centre of the Te Papa building.
