Maori leaders consistently opposed the New Zealand Rugby Union's policy of respecting the politics of the host country. In apartheid South Africa, Maori could not play against the Springboks.
In 1960, a 'No Maoris No Tour' petition gained wider support, gathering 60,000 signatures, but the All Blacks toured South Africa without Maori anyway.
