Bailey typewriter, 1951 waterfront dispute
Typewriter about 1950, Imperial Typewriter Company, England. Gift of Meg Bailey, 2007. Te Papa
During New Zealand's 1951 waterfront dispute, police ransacked Chip and Rona Bailey's home searching for this hidden typewriter. The Baileys used it to produce leaflets supporting the watersiders.
The police failed to find the typewriter, even with their 'emergency' search-and-arrest powers.
