Soon after Queen Victoria's death in 1901, her grandson and his wife, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, visited New Zealand. The colony showed its continuing loyalty to the British Empire by holding grand events in their honour. One of the events was the 'Maori Demonstration' referred to in this invitation. 

Queen Victoria's death earlier in the year had been mourned widely in New Zealand.
