If you thought you knew tyrannosaurs, think again. Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family explores how these terrifying dinosaurs became the world’s top predators with their massive skulls, powerful jaws, and bone-crunching teeth.
The most famous member of the family was the mighty T.rex, but did you know that tyrannosaurs came in all shapes and sizes? They included Guanlong, the 'crown dragon', and Dilong, the tiny 'emperor dragon' with a skeleton just 1 metre long.
Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family is an interactive exhibition featuring augmented reality, multimedia experiences, and hands-on fun to delight visitors of all ages. Be prepared for lots of surprises and goose-bump moments.

Budding dinosaur hunters! Tyrannosaur remains have been discovered at Te Papa! Help uncover them with our Tyrannosaurs Trail.
With T. rex in town, and no dino beer on tap, we got ParrotDog to brew us one – an easy-drinking ale to quench a mighty thirst!
Why ParrotDog? They’re family, of course. Parrots, after all, descend from a distinguished line of avian coelurosaur theropods. As for ParrotDogs … well, they’re an evolutionary sensation.
Get the brew at Te Papa’s two cafes, on tap at ParrotDog in Vivian Street, and at all good craft beer outlets around Wellington and New Zealand. Plus, keep an eye out for our Jurassic beer-tasting events.
Scotty, the baby T. rex who came over to visit his family has gone back to Australia but you can still visit his family here at Te Papa until 8 Feb 2015. Bring your family to meet Scotty’s Tyrannosaur relatives in the exhibition. No puppets this time – you’ll see amazing fossils and casts from around the world, all together in New Zealand for the first time.
Teachers, here's all the background on tyrannosaurs and fossils you'll need, along with curriculum links and fun student activities for before, during, and after your visit. Programmes for ECE, primary and secondary schools are on offer.
Check out our exciting range of tyrannosaurs gifts, from dinosaur books to velociraptor puppets – perfect for kids!
