Study of clouds 28 July 1822
oil on paper
The Frick Collection, New York, bequest of Henrietta E S Lockwood in memory of her father and mother, Ellery Sedgewick and Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, in 2000
In this sky study, Constable portrayed the characteristic forms of the cumulus clouds and captured the light at noon.
His inscription on the work reads ‘28th July 12 o’clock noon. Very fine day, showery and warm’. The inscription agrees with the weather records for the London area on the day.
