Constable painted this work for his friend and patron Dr John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury. Constable often visited Salisbury to stay with Dr Fisher or with his nephew, John Fisher, one of Constable’s closest friends.
Constable painted several views of the cathedral. This view from the south-west is one of the artist’s best-known works – and his most important exhibit at the1823 Royal Academy exhibition.
