Head

A carved mask representing Mehit protects her face. Masks were considered necessary so that the ba (soul) could recognise its body when it returned to the tomb, even if the mummy’s head was lost or damaged.

Mehit’s mask is gilded with a painted blue wig. The tip of the nose has been lost. Tomb robbers commonly removed the gilt noses from coffins and mummy masks, searching for hidden gold.
