How we help Māori/iwi

Nau mai, haere mai

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha.
Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.
Tēnā koutou e te iwi e noho mai nā i ō koutou kāinga maha. He maimai aroha ki te hunga kua whetūrangihia, ā, he mauriora tātau ki a tātau anō te hunga ora.

Tihei mauriora!

Welcome and greetings from National Services Te Paerangi, a team at Te Papa that is committed to working with whānau, hapu and iwi to ensure that you have the right support, resources, advice and opportunities to continue caring for the taonga entrusted to you.

We recognise that taonga and their stories are treasured expressions of the Maori culture both past and present and that the care of these is important in terms of their ongoing role in the future identity of Aotearoa.  We best meet the challenge of looking after them by working together.

We’re also committed to building, developing, and enhancing relationships with iwi, museums and related organisations, all of whom have a role to play in the ongoing care and protection of the heritage of Aotearoa.

He aha tōu hiahia?

  • Wananga

Workshops on marae for iwi representatives have been developed in response to the needs of iwi and have included taonga and paper conservation and digitisation of wharenui photographs.

  • Hui

We support and encourage hui. The latest we have been involved in being Kaitiaki Hui and the Takitimu Festival.

  • Resources for iwi

This section will be available soon, and will include links to resources, templates, and workshop material relevant to iwi. In the mean time check out this page.

  • Funding for iwi

We have two grants programmes to assist: Museum and Iwi Development Grans and Helping Hands Grants.
