Rangi Kipa (born 1966), New Zealand (Taranaki, Te Ăti Awa Nui Tonu, Ngāti Maniapoto),
Hei tiki, 2001, Corian, päua shell. Purchased 2003
Colour and custom
Carver and artist Rangi Kipa enjoys the possibilities and challenges of using Corian, a blend of natural materials and acrylic polymer. Like whale tooth, bone, and pounamu, Corian is unforgiving to work with, but it’s cheaper and more readily available.
Note: This work has been removed to make way for the exhibition New Zealand at the Venice Biennale 2009.
