What you need:
- equipment as listed below
- a large area (the school playground is good).
What to do
Label the items below with the names of the planets they represent:
| Beach ball |
Sun |
| Poppy seed |
Mercury |
| Pea |
Venus |
| Pea |
Earth |
| Lentil |
Mars |
| Squash ball |
Jupiter |
| Table tennis ball |
Saturn |
| Marble |
Neptune |
| Poppy seed |
Pluto |
Place the beach ball (Sun) at one end of the area.
Get your students to pace out the following distances from the beach ball.
| Poppy seed (Mercury) |
12 paces |
| Pea (Venus) |
23 paces |
| Pea (Earth) |
32 paces |
| Lentil (Mars) |
49 paces |
| Squash ball (Jupiter) |
167 paces |
| Table tennis ball (Saturn) |
300 paces |
| Marble (Uranus) |
600 paces |
| Marble (Neptune) |
900 paces |
| Poppy seed (Pluto) |
1270 paces |
Don't be surprised if you run out of space before you reach Neptune!
These objects and distances are not exact but they are reasonably accurate.
If you wanted to add the next star in our galaxy you would need another beach ball and it would be in England!
