Some artworks are acquired long after they were created as their significance becomes recognised over time. These are often included within the acquisition of a larger body of work covering many years backwards from the present. Such ‘retrospective acquisitions’ help build a richer and more refined picture of an artist’s practice and development, or of the evolution of an art movement.
