Te Huka ā Tai weaving. Photographed by Norman Heke.Te Papa.2008
Te Huka ā Tai Discovery Centre is a space for tamariki (children) that celebrates te ao Māori – the Māori world.
Try your hand at weaving, play games with tī rākau (rhythm sticks), dress up and practise poi (balls on cords), and walk on stilts. Taonga old and new are on display, and you can find reference books in the research room.
Ngāti Toa display
Te Huka ā Tai currently features a vibrant display from Te Papa’s resident iwi (tribe), Ngāti Toa Rangatira. See works by children of Ngāti Toa School, Porirua, and other artists from the iwi, all celebrating kaitiakitanga – guardianship. You’ll find prints, weaving, painting, and carving – a cross-section of Ngāti Toa creativity. The display is part of the exhibition Whiti Te Rā! The story of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, also on Level 4.
