He Wāhine, He Whenua – Digital portrait statements

Visit Robyn Kahukiwa: Tohunga Mahi Toi at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery to learn about the depth and power of Kahukiwa’s image-making.

Students will then visit Te Papa’s Learning lab Hīnātore to create their own digital portrait artworks inspired by messages of resilience and protest.

Guided by our educators, your students will:

  • Learn about the depth and power of the image making in Robyn Kahukiwa: Tohunga Mahi Toi.

  • Engage in critical discussion about the cultural and social context surrounding Kahukiwa’s work.

  • Take inspiration from the messaging of resilience and empowering statements to reflect on their own contexts and creative agency.

  • Explore Te Papa’s collection online imagery to enhance their powerful messages.

  • Be introduced to a range of digital tools and techniques; green screening, digital and physical collage making etc.

  • Learn to build layers of meaning in their own unique ‘digital portrait statement’ artworks.
