Learn about the Māori New Year, the Maramataka (lunar calendar), and the theme of renewal. You can also explore the Matariki star cluster in our stardome.

The visit will begin with an introduction to the Lunar Calendar – the Maramataka. Students will participate in interactive activities using moon phase cards with descriptions detailing planting and harvesting opportunities,

Students will have a chance to view our on-the-floor Maramataka interactive and discuss Matariki, the New Year, renewal, and the Maramataka. They will listen to stories from Māori who use the Maramataka as a way to help inform their planning for planting, fishing, and hunting.

Finally, students will journey through the night sky and learn how to spot Matariki (Pleiades) and other constellations in our immersive cosmodome.
