The education programme

Guided by our educators, your primary school students will:

  • come onto Te Papa’s marae to:

  • experience a pōwhiripōwhiri welcoming ceremony

  • gain an understanding of when, where, and how pōwhiri can be applied

  • explore the meaning of pōwhiripōwhiri welcoming ceremonies by experiencing the nine major steps on Te Papa’s wharenuiwharenui meeting houses

  • discover taongataonga treasures around the museum which illuminate the origins of pōwhiripōwhiri welcoming ceremonies
