Wooden materials placed together to look like a nest

Nest Te Kōhanga

Step into the Nest and immerse yourself in birdsong. Which native birds are thriving, threatened, or extinct? Touch their eggs to find out.

Ko te māra o Tāne, kīkī e manu. Kua ngū te reo o te moa o te huia. Ko ngā manu māori e whare ngaro atu ana, ko ēhea rānei e kō i te ata? Kōmiria ā rātou hua kia kitea ai.

In the centre is a fragile moa egg – a symbol of lost maurimauri the life force  and hope at once, and one of Te Papa’s most precious collection items.

Takoto kau nei ki te manawa he huamoa tawhito – he tohu nō te whare ngaro, he tohu rānei nō te whare ora, koia tētahi o ngā taonga puiaki ā Te Papa.
